South Korea 2 Germany 0

Now that makes a refreshing change. Germany knocked out in the group stage for the first time since 1938.

In the past 16 World Cups, Germany have never failed to make it to the last eight. They came to Russia as World and Confederations Cup champions, as a nation that had industrialised youth development, that seemed to have effectively eliminated the possibility of failure. But football has a strange way of making a mockery of the most well-grounded predictions and they went home after losing to a South Korea side that had already lost to Sweden and Mexico.

The knife, in the end, was lunged in by VAR, which showed Toni Kroos prodding back the ball that Kim Young-gwon lashed home from a late corner, overturning an offside call. And then, as though the gods had decided thoroughly to mock Germany,  Manuel Neur up field in the South Korean half was relieved of the ball and was easily beaten with a long pass to Spurs Son Heung-Min who was in his own half scored on the breakaway, as Korea knocked the defending World Cup champions out of Russia 2018.

England 6 Panama 1

What a refreshing change with England at 5-0  half time and no panic or stress. Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as England swaggered to the World Cup knockout stage with a game to spare after routing Panama 6-1 in Nizhny Novgorod.

A record World Cup haul had come in an exhilarating first half as John Stones scored twice from set-pieces Kane lashed two penalties and Jesse Lingard found the top corner with a curling strike .

Kane knew little about his 62nd-minute third, diverting Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s shot in via his heel, but a World Cup treble takes him top of the goalscoring charts in Russia, as well as putting him in illustrious England company alongside Gary Lineker and Sir Geoff Hurst.

Xhaka and Shaqiri – both ethnic Albanians from Kosovo – appeared to make a gesture that mirrored the Albanian ‘double-headed eagle’ flag.

A Serbian crackdown on the Albanian population of Kosovo in the 1990s has left plenty of ill-feeling between the two nations, and while Xhaka was born in Switzerland, the Arsenal midfielder has made a point of embracing his Kosovan roots – due to his father being a political prisoner who was jailed in the former Yugoslavia for three-and-a-half years. Shaqiri was born in the Kosovan city of Gjilan, before emigrating with his family to Switzerland as a young boy.

And why not is what I say as I reproduce the gesture in The Field.

Livin’ La Vida Loca

Ricky Martin

She’s into superstitions black cats and voodoo dolls
I feel a premonition that girl’s gonna make me fall

She’s into new sensations new kicks in the candle light
She’s got a new addiction for every day and night

She’ll make you take your clothes off and go dancing in the rain
She’ll make you live her crazy life but she’ll take away your pain
Like a bullet to your brain
Come on!

Upside, inside out she’s living la vida loca
She’ll push and pull you down, living la vida loca
Her lips are devil-red and her skin’s the color mocha
She will wear you out living la vida loca
Come on!
Living la vida loca
Come on!
She’s living la vida loca

Woke up in New York City in a funky cheap hotel
She took my heart and she took my money
She must’ve slipped me a sleeping pill

She never drinks the water
Makes you order French Champagne
Once you’ve had a taste of her
You’ll never be the same
Yeah, she’ll make you go insane
Alright

Upside, inside out she’s living la vida loca
She’ll push and pull you down, living la vida loca
Her lips are devil-red and her skin’s the color mocha
She will wear you out living la vida loca
Alright!
Living la vida loca
She’s living la vida loca

She’ll make you take your clothes off and go dancing in the rain
She’ll make you live her crazy life
But she’ll take away your pain
Like a bullet to your brain
Come on!

Upside, inside out she’s living la vida loca
She’ll push and pull you down, living la vida loca
Her lips are devil-red and her skin’s the color mocha
She will wear you out living la vida loca
Come on!

Nobody Wins

Elton John

They must have loved each other once
But that was many years ago
And by the time I came along
Things were already going wrong
I felt the pain in their pretense
The side they tried hard not to show
But through the simple eyes of youth
It wasn’t hard to see the truth

And in the end nobody wins
When love begins to fall apart
And it’s the innocent who pay
When broken dreams get in the way
The game begins, the game nobody wins

They must have loved each other once
Before the magic slipped away
And as their life became a lie
What love remained began to die
I used to hide beneath the sheets
I prayed that time would find a way
But with the passing of the years
I watched as laughter turned to tears
We used to love each other once
With all the passion we possessed
But people change as time goes by
Some feelings grow while others die
But if we learn from what we see
And face the truth while we still can
Then though the passion may be gone
Some kind of love can still live on

Nobody wins
And it’s the innocent who pay
When broken dreams get in the way
The game begins, the game nobody wins

Serbia 1 Switzerland 2

I love Xherdan Shaqiri he is great. So happy he scored this goal to beat Serbia 2-1.

2758

Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri stuns Serbia with late breakaway goal in the last minute, Xherdan Shaqiri was racing away, Serbs in pursuit but unable to catch him before he slipped the ball under Vladimir Stojkovic. It was the goal that defeated Serbia and put Switzerland in a strong position to progress to the next round, but it was also much more than that. As he turned and screamed, he took his shirt off, flexed his muscles and performed a double-eagle celebration, a recreation of the Albanian flag. Alongside him, Granit Xhaka did the same – for the second time.

“It was a fantastic goal, an important goal for my team and I am very proud I was able to score it for them,” Shaqiri said. “I can’t discuss the gesture I’m afraid. We are footballers, not politicians… Emotions sometimes take over footballers and there was a lot of emotion out there.”  His shirt off celebration was not to be missed.

Tom Bowline and Jack Tar.

Thomas Dibdin

Here a sheer hulk lies poor Tom Bowling,
The darling of our crew;
No more he’ll hear the tempest howling,
For death has broach’d him to:
His form was of the manliest beauty,
His heart was kind and soft.
Faithful, below, he did his duty,
And now he’s gone aloft,
And now he’s gone aloft.

Tom never from his word departed,
His virtues were so rare,
His friends were many, and true-hearted,
His Poll was kind and fair:
And then he’d sing so blithe and jolly –
Ah! many’s the Time and oft –
But mirth is turn’d to melancholy,
For Tom is gone aloft,
For Tom is gone aloft.

Yet shall poor Tom find pleasant weather,
When He, who all commands,
Shall give, to call life’s crew together,
The word to pipe all hands:
Thus death, who Kings and tars dispatches,
In vain Tom’s life has doff’d,
For though his body’s under hatches,
His soul has gone aloft,
His soul has gone aloft.

Argentina 0 Croatia 3

Luka Modric another of my favourite players put in a fine individual performance punctuated with an 80th-minute goal that resembled the sort of strike that Messi has made his hallmark. Modric received the ball on the edge of the area, took two touches, then quickly swerved to find just enough space to bend a shot past Cabellero.
