Danny Ings’ first-half goal was enough to hand Southampton a key Premier League win over Spurs at St Mary’s on New Year’s Day.

Ings scored his 13th League goal of the season after bamboozling Toby Alderweireld to hand Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints a deserved lead.

Spurs were disappointing on the day, and an injury for Harry Kane after the break – immediately after seeing an effort correctly ruled out for offside following a VAR check – ensured a miserable day on the south coast for Jose Mourinho.

The result was especially frustrating for Spurs considering that Chelsea – currently fourth in the table – drew 1-1 at Brighton earlier on Wednesday.

Instead of closing the gap in the race for Champions League qualification, Spurs now sit six points adrift of the Blues – and on the basis of their performance here, Mourinho’s side have work to do in defence, midfield and attack in the coming weeks.

Jose Mourinho reacting that defeat: “It was quite a strange game. We had no problems defensively. They didn’t create great problems. They scored one goal. Danny Ings did well. We were in control apart from that. We didn’t create much but enough to score. They stopped the game and defended well. The centre-backs gave a hard game to our attacking players who were aggressive and didn’t make mistakes. In the last part of the game without Harry Kane and another striker, without Son, we were limited in our options. I feel it is too harsh the result but it is what it is.
