The Mattress

Lockdown was an eye opener today
Not so much lockdown for me
I should be isolated
Not for me but for everyone
I should be staying at home
But things have to be done
The couple next door in so much need
The cavalry was not coming today
He lay in bed near deaf, near blind
She caring for him when she needs care herself
A mattress almost too big to fit through the door
Had been delivered and left on the steps
When I got it in it the home it almost filled the kitchen
Slipping on its plastic wrap I had to wrestle it into the lounge
She gingerly moved around its bulk
While carrying a glass of water for his antibiotics
Then the shop delivered her grocery
They covered the steps and entrance hall
This retirement home was never designed for the elderly
I carried in her groceries and took out her rubbish
The cavalry was not coming today
He looked from his bed at me through dull shrouded eyes
He didn’t know who was speaking to him
He said he was just worried for her
I had to go out to get his incontinence pads
What a terrible undignified end
She sat in a heap worn away with the doing
It was a glimpse of the future I didn’t wish to see
Not today anyway
Not any day
I’m not family
I’m not a frontline worker
But things have to be done
Things have to be done

One Minute Silence in April

They may well hang their heads
For its they that caused the deaths of these key workers
With their unswerving desire to bring on the worst
Shaking their fists at it standing so close in their closed ranks
That their failures were mistaken for cracks that these innocents fell into
Only their smiling lying teeth had bigger gaps
And their stupid cracked grin cost these honest people their lives
Failure to deliver what was promised
Failure to protect those caring and cared for
Failure to see the obvious
Failure to follow a plan designed to save lives not money
Failure to tell us the truth
One minutes silence and £60,000 should do the trick
Without prejudice, sign here and we will say the account is closed
We hold up our hands and admit to nothing
We followed the science and we encouraged the herd
Lets all observe the silence
And we will say no more of it

Going on an Errand

Anonymous

A pound of tea at one and three
And a pot of raspberry jam,
Two new laid eggs, a dozen pegs
And a pound of rashers of ham.

I’ll say it over all the way
And then I’m sure not to forget,
For if I chance to bring things wrong
My Mother gets in such a sweat.

A pound of tea at one and three
And a pot of raspberry jam,
Two new laid eggs, a dozen pegs
And a pound of rashers of ham.

There in the hay the children play,
They’re having such fine fun!
I’ll go there too, that’s what I’ll do,
As soon as my errands are done.

A pound of tea at one and three,
A pot of new laid jam,
Two raspberry eggs with a dozen pegs,
And a pound of rashers of ham.

There’s Teddy White flying his kite,
He thinks himself grand I declare!
I’d like to make it fly up sky high,
Ever so much higher than the old church spire.

And then – but there…

A pound of three at one and tea,
A pot of new laid jam,
Two dozen eggs, some raspberry pegs,
And a pound of rashers of ham.

Now here’s the shop, outside I’ll stop
And run my orders through again,
I haven’t forgot – it’s better not,
It shows I’m pretty quick, that’s plain.

A pound of tea at one and three,
A dozen of raspberry ham,
A pot of eggs with a dozen pegs,
And a rasher of new laid jam.

Marble Halls

“I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls”, or “The Gipsy Girl’s Dream”, is a popular aria from The Bohemian Girl, an 1843 opera by Michael William Balfe, with lyrics by Alfred Bunn. It is sung in the opera by the character Arline, who is in love with Thaddeus, a Polish nobleman and political exile.

Enya

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
With vassals and serfs at my side,
And of all who assembled within those walls
That I was the hope and the pride.
I had riches all too great to count
And a high ancestral name.

But I also dreamt which pleased me most
That you loved me still the same,
That you loved me
You loved me still the same,
That you loved me
You loved me still the same.

I dreamt that suitors sought my hand,
That knights upon bended knee
And with vows no maidens heart could withstand,
They pledged their faith to me.
And I dreamt that one of that noble host
Came forth my hand to claim.

But I also dreamt which charmed me most
That you loved me still the same
That you loved me
You loved me still the same,
That you loved me
You loved me still the same.

Gryphaea, common name devil’s toenails, is a genus of extinct oysters, marine bivalve mollusks in the family Gryphaeidae.

JURASSIC OYSTER
or ‘DEVIL’S TOENAIL’

190 million years old

The extinct bivalved mollusc Gryphaea arcuata is a well-known and distinctive fossil and an ancestor of the modern oyster.

It has one shell, or valve, much larger than the other and strongly curved as an adaptation to living on a muddy sea floor. Its characteristic shape has led to it being called the ‘Devil’s toenail’ in folklore.

These fossils range from the Triassic period to the middle Paleogene period, but are mostly restricted to the Triassic and Jurassic. They are particularly common in many parts of Britain.

These oysters lived on the sea bed in shallow waters, possibly in large colonies. The complete fossils consist of two articulated valves: a larger gnarly-shaped shell (the “toenail”) and a smaller, flattened shell, the “lid”. The soft parts of the animal occupied the cavity between the two shells, just like modern oysters. The shells also feature prominent growth bands.

Thursdays April 2020

No amount of applause
Banging of pots
Blowing of whistles
And painted rainbows
Can cover my doubts I have of a subterfuge
A hidden agenda created to baffle and confuse me
Figures quoted at me every day only add up to a paradox
I see needy people overlooked and confused
I see money given to people who clearly don’t need it
I imagine these greedy people cheating and lying
They use their underhand, under the table union of falsehoods
In order to grow their piles of ill-gotten gains into a mighty stash
Clever and calculating they use a set of documents that only they understand
Single minded and false they stand in the street and let people see them clap
I’m so smart see me clap
I know how to make this work for me clap, clap
Don’t bother me asking to help others I’m far to busy helping myself
Clap, clap, clap
Clapping over for another Thursday
Now back to my mansion and count my blessings until I so softly fall asleep
